When to Go · December

Botswana in December: green, young and on the move.

Afternoon storms, newborn animals and the zebra migration reaching the pans.

Updated October 2026 3 min read

In short: December is green, warm and full of young animals, with afternoon storms and some of the most dramatic skies of the year. The zebra migration reaches the Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pan, and the birding is superb.

Rates are low until the festive season, when Christmas and New Year bring peak pricing and minimum stays at many camps. Malaria risk rises with the rains, which matters for families with young children.

Wildlife in December.

Most antelope have given birth by December, so the bush is full of young impala, tsessebe and wildebeest, and the predators are busy. The zebra and wildebeest arrive on the pans with the rain, followed by lions and cheetah.

Migrant birds are present in large numbers, and many residents are breeding. In the Delta, game is more dispersed and the vegetation is thick, but you share sightings with very few vehicles.

Botswana in December, answered

What guests ask us.

Is December a good time to visit Botswana?

Yes, for the zebra migration, newborn animals and birding, at green-season rates outside the festive period.

Is Botswana busy over Christmas?

Camps charge peak rates and often set minimum stays over Christmas and New Year, and the best ones fill early. Book well ahead for those dates.

Is the zebra migration on in December?

Usually from December, when the rain draws the herds onto the pans. It follows the rain, so timing varies by a few weeks each year.
