When to Go · March

Botswana in March: the pans full, the flood on its way.

The rains begin to ease, and both of Botswana’s calendars overlap.

Updated October 2026 3 min read

In short: March is the tail of the green season. Rain eases, though it can still be wet, the pans are full, and the zebra are still at Nxai Pan and on the grasslands. The Central Kalahari remains excellent, and far to the north the new Okavango flood has crossed into Botswana and begun to fill the Panhandle.

Rates are still at green-season levels, which makes March a very good month to combine the pans with the Delta: the deserts are at their best, and the Delta is green, quiet and beginning to fill.

Wildlife in March.

On the pans, the zebra and wildebeest graze the last of the rich grass before they start to drift west. Lion, cheetah and the occasional brown hyena work the edges of the herds. In the Kalahari, springbok and gemsbok are still concentrated in the valleys.

In the north, the young of the season are now sturdy enough to keep up with their herds, and the predators are well fed. Migrant birds are still present before their return north, and the wetlands are full. Game in the Delta is dispersed, but the bush is beautiful and camps are quiet.

Days stay hot, around 31°C, but nights start to cool. Storms become less frequent as the month goes on, and late March often brings long runs of clear days. The landscape is at its greenest.

Prices, crowds and booking.

Green-season rates still apply at most camps, and availability is good. Easter sometimes falls in late March, and that fortnight books up faster. Six to nine months’ notice is usually enough.

What to pack for March.

Light clothes for hot days, a light fleece for evenings, and a rain jacket. Take antimalarial advice for the north.

Our packing guide has the full checklist and the soft-bag rules for light aircraft.

What guests ask us.

Is the zebra migration still on in March?

Usually, yes. The herds tend to be at Nxai Pan and on the grasslands into March before drifting west. Because it follows the rain, we confirm where they are before you travel.

Is March a good month to combine the Kalahari and the Delta?

It is one of the best. The Kalahari and pans are still excellent, and the Delta is green and quiet, at green-season rates.

When does the rain stop?

Rain eases through March and usually ends in April. By May, rain is rare.
