When to Go · April

Botswana in April: clear skies and the bush still green.

The rains end, the air clears, and the country starts to dry.

Updated October 2026 3 min read

In short: April is one of the loveliest months in the calendar. The rains end, skies clear, the landscape is still green and the temperatures are comfortable: highs around 30°C, with cooler nights. Many camps move to shoulder rates, and crowds are still thin.

It is a month of change. The zebra drift west from the pans towards the Boteti River, the flood moves down through the Delta, and impala begin their rut, so the bush is loud with roaring males. Easter is the one busy fortnight.

Wildlife in April.

The impala rut is the sound of April: territorial males roar, chase and spar from dawn to dusk. The zebra and wildebeest begin to leave the pans and move towards the Boteti River, and some pass through Savuti on their migration route.

As pans and puddles dry, animals slowly start to move back towards permanent water. Vegetation is still thick, so sightings take a little more work than in the dry season, but predators are active and the light is clear and soft.

Botswana in April, answered

What guests ask us.

Is April a good time to visit Botswana?

It is one of our favourite months: clear skies, green landscapes, comfortable temperatures and shoulder rates, with far fewer visitors than peak season.

Does it still rain in April?

Occasionally, early in the month. By mid-April the rains are usually over.

Is the zebra migration over by April?

The herds are leaving the pans and moving west towards the Boteti River, and some pass through Savuti. It is the end of the migration rather than its peak.
