When to Go · June

Botswana in June: winter, the flood and the start of the dry season.

Cold mornings, warm days, full channels, and many camps still at shoulder rates.

Updated October 2026 3 min read

In short: June is winter. Days are sunny and around 25°C, but early mornings can fall to 5°C or below, with frost on the pans and in the Kalahari. The flood is spreading across the Okavango Delta, water camps have their best mokoro and boating, and the animals are concentrating around permanent water.

Many camps keep shoulder rates for June, which makes it one of the best-value months of the year. It is also the start of the lowest-risk period for malaria.

Wildlife in June.

As the bush dries and the leaves fall, visibility opens up and game gathers near water. Wild dogs often begin denning from June, which makes them easier to find in the Linyanti and the Delta’s private concessions. Lion, leopard and hyena are active in the cool mornings.

The zebra are gathering on the Boteti River in the Makgadikgadi, and elephant are returning in growing numbers to the Chobe and Linyanti rivers.

Dry and sunny every day. The daily range is huge: near freezing at dawn in an open vehicle, then shirt-sleeves by late morning. Nights in the Kalahari and on the pans can drop below zero.

Prices, crowds and booking.

June is often priced at shoulder rates while giving much of the dry-season experience. It is popular with families because of school holidays in some countries and the low malaria risk, so book the best camps early: nine to twelve months is wise.

What to pack for June.

Proper warm clothes: a down or fleece jacket, a warm hat, gloves and a scarf for early drives, plus layers you can strip off by mid-morning. Camps provide blankets and hot-water bottles on the vehicles.
