Victoria Falls and Chobe: how to combine them.

An hour apart by road, across one border, and one of the best pairings in Africa.

Updated October 2026 3 min read

The short answer: stay two nights at Victoria Falls and two or three nights on the Chobe riverfront from Kasane. They are about 80km apart, roughly an hour by road plus the border at Kazungula. Most nationalities need a Zimbabwe or Zambia visa for the Falls; the KAZA Univisa covers both and allows day trips into Botswana.

A day trip from the Falls to Chobe is popular, but it gives you a few hours on the river at the busiest time of day. Staying in Kasane gives you the afternoon river cruise and early morning game drives, which is when Chobe is at its best.

Getting between Victoria Falls and Chobe.

Kasane sits near Kazungula, where Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Namibia meet. From the Zimbabwe side, the road from Victoria Falls town to Kasane is about 80km, roughly an hour plus border formalities at Kazungula. From the Zambia side, the Kazungula Bridge, opened in 2021, carries road traffic from Livingstone across the Zambezi into Botswana.

We arrange the transfer with the border crossing built into the day, and meet you on the Botswana side. Allow for queues at busy times.

Visas and the KAZA Univisa.

  • Zimbabwe and Zambia issue visas on arrival or online to many nationalities.
  • The KAZA Univisa, at the time of writing around US$50 and valid for 30 days, covers both Zimbabwe and Zambia and allows day trips into Botswana through Kazungula. It is useful if you will cross between the two sides of the Falls.
  • Botswana is visa-free for many nationalities, including the UK, EU and US. Your normal Botswana entry rules apply for a safari.

Every crossing uses passport pages: carry at least two blank pages plus two per extra border. Rules change, and the Univisa is not always available, so we confirm the requirements for every passport in your party in writing. See our visa and entry guide.

How many nights in each.

  • Victoria Falls: two nights. Time to see the Falls properly, and add a sunset cruise on the Zambezi or a helicopter flight.
  • Chobe: two or three nights. Two gives a river cruise and a game drive each day; three adds a photographic boat or more time on the riverfront.

With a week or more, continue from Kasane by light aircraft to Savuti, the Linyanti or the Okavango Delta. See Okavango Delta or Chobe.

When to go.

The two peak at different times. The Zambezi is fullest from around March to May, when the Falls are thunderous but spray can hide the view; it is lowest around October and November, when parts of the Zambian side can run almost dry while the Zimbabwe side keeps more water. Chobe is at its best for elephants from August to November.

For both together, June to September is a good compromise: plenty of water at the Falls with clearer views, and the dry-season herds building on the Chobe. See when to go.

Which way round?

Either works. Starting at the Falls and finishing on safari ends the trip on its high point; starting in Chobe and finishing at the Falls suits international flights out of Victoria Falls or Livingstone. Kasane’s airport has direct flights from Johannesburg, which gives flexibility both ways.

Our Chobe Introduction is four days from Kasane and combines naturally with the Falls.
